National Infant Immunization Week begins in Polk

Bartow, Florida -- The Florida Department of Health in Polk County recognizes the week of April 20-27, 2013, as National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW). 

National Infant Immunization Week is an annual observance promoting the benefits of immunization to improve the health of children two-years-old or younger. 

This year's theme is "Immunization: Power to Protect." 

Vaccines are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available for preventing disease and death.

Students say high school stalling on club

KATHLEEN, Fla. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union will represent two students who have been unable to obtain permission to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at Kathleen High School in Polk County.

The Lakeland Ledger (http://bit.ly/15sa5KH) reports that 17-year-old students Rory Teal and Brenna Pelland said they began asking in November for the school's principal to meet with them about starting the club - but say their requests have been put off.

Armed robbery in Winter Haven, suspects on the loose

Polk County, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's Office detectives are looking for a group of men who robbed a man after attacking him.

On April 18, deputies responded to an area near 3rd Street an Avenue Y, in Winter Haven. 

The victim was outside smoking when he was
confronted by an unknown black male suspect. The suspect brandished a handgun
and demanded the victim's money. The victim refused and the subject struck him. 

Man wanted for shooting girlfriend 3 times caught in Georgia

Polk County, Florida -- The hunt is over for the man wanted for allegedly shooting his girlfriend multiple times in the head on April 16.

U.S. Marshals arrested 44-year-old Randall Scott Miller in Carrollton, Georgia, where he is being held at the Jack T. Bell Detention Center in Carroll County about 50 miles west of downtown Atlanta where he will await extradition back to Polk County.

Polk Sheriff's deputies say Miller shot his 52-year-old girlfriend Micki Pickern three times around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the area of Lake Van Road and CCR 559 in Auburndale.

All lanes open on Hwy 27 after 3-semi crash

Polk County, Florida -- UPDATE: Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies say all lanes of Highway 27 are now open after a crash involving three semi tractor trailers early Friday morning.

Investigators are still looking into the crash that took place around 2:37 a.m. and destroyed two trucks due to a fire resulting form the crash.

Fugitive from New Jersey arrested in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Florida (AP) - Polk County Sheriff's Deputies and officers from a U.S. Marshals task force have arrested a New Jersey fugitive on homicide charges in Florida.

Raymond A. Finch was wanted in Cumberland County, N.J., for the 2007 shooting of a woman and her baby. The woman died from the shooting and the baby survived but was paralyzed.

Recently, the 34-year-old Finch was identified as the suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Authorities received information that Finch may be in the Kissimmee area.
