Wanted man with 'violent past' arrested

Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police say the man wanted for using a stolen bank card at a Walgreen's store last week has been arrested.

Police say they found 41-year-old Leonard Steelman, Jr. on the evening of April 8 after he tried to hide in a local park. Officers went by his mother's home after they received a tip and when they arrived he fled the home.

28 arrested in illegal gambling bust

Winter Haven, Florida -- A two-month long illegal gambling investigation resulted in the arrest of 28 people and one juvenile on various gambling and drug charges.

On Friday, April 5, Winter Haven Police Special Investigations Unit members executed a search warrant at a home in the 300 block of Quentin Avenue, NW. 

Teacher caught with marijuana during traffic stop

Haines City, Florida -- A Haines City teacher was busted for marijuana possession over the weekend during a traffic stop.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says Donna Dennard was pulled over after she failed to stop at a stop sign at Shamrock Drive East and Highway 92 around 9 p.m. Saturday.

As the deputy was talking with Dennard, he smelled what he thought was marijuana coming from inside the car. When he asked if he could search the car, Dennard reportedly became nervous and admitted she had a bag of pot in the car.

Young Marine killed in mortar accident laid to rest

WINTER HAVEN, Florida -- A 20-year-old Marine from Polk City who died after a training accident last month was laid to rest on Saturday.

Lance Cpl. David Fenn was one of seven young Marines who was killed when a 60 mm mortar exploded on March 18 during a live fire training exercise in Nevada.

"I just can't believe it. All the people here, all the flags, all the motorcycles," Fenn's great uncle, John Elliott, said about the funeral service in Winter Haven. "This is more than I could ever hope to see."
