Polk County Public Schools and the Community Relations Advisory Council of the Board of County Commissioners announced the winners of the 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the annual MLK Breakfast at the Bartow Civic Center.

This year’s essay contest topic was “What Does the Dream Mean to Me?”  Students wrote about what Dr. King had envisioned or hoped to see and what you can do today to promote or advance his dream.

Polk County, FL -- January is the month of highest blood usage by patients in Tampa Bay.   In addition, there is a critical need for more minority donors on the National Marrow Donor Program's 'Be The Match' Registry. 

Therefore, 10 News has teamed up with Bealls to sponsor the 10 News Martin Luther King Day Blood & Marrow Donor Registry Drive, on Monday, Jan. 16. 

Florida Blood Services bloodmobiles will be located at the Bealls store location at 3565 Lakeland Highlands Rd. in Lakeland from noon - 6 p.m.

Pursuit ends in drug arrests

Plant City, FL -- Police arrested three people Thursday after a police pursuit in the Plant City area.

Luis Coronado, of Plant City, Ashley Chapman, of Winter Haven, and Regilio Robles-Cazares, of Plant City, were all caught in  possession of drugs after the brief chase.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, around 1:48 p.m. Jan. 12, deputies attempted to pull over a blue Suburban in the area of Stafford and Branch Forbes Road after they received information Coronado was driving without a license and was possibly armed.

Florida to shut 7 prisons

Tallahassee, Florida (Tallahassee Democrat) -- The Department of Corrections plans to close seven prisons and four work camps in the next few months, including two in the Bay area. 

Statewide, the department will cut nearly 1,300 jobs in coming months.

'Rowdy' Gaines Olympic Pool closed for repairs

Winter Haven, FL -- The 'Rowdy' Gaines Olympic Pool, at the Chain O'Lakes Complex, is getting a facelift!

The popular pool, used for lifeguard training, scuba diving training, a practice spot for the Winter Haven Stingrays Swim Team, and recreational swimmers, is going to be closed for two weeks beginning today, Jan. 11 while the pool liner is replaced.

The $76,875 project will be done by Aquatic Renovations Systems, Inc.

The Winter Haven Stingrays competitive swim team will practice in Lakeland until the work is done.
