One dead after nine car pile-up in Lake Wales

Lake Wales, Florida -- Smoke and fog are believed to be the cause of another deadly pileup, this time in Lake Wales.

Polk deputies say nine vehicles were involved in three separate crashes shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 27.  There had been reports of limited visibility on the road just minutes before the accidents.

Investigators say a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on U.S. 27 crossed the center media into the northbound lanes and struck a silver Ford Expedition and a motorcycle.

Old Dixie Highway closure

Old Dixie Highway closure

Auburndale, Fla. -- The Polk County Transportation Division has announced Old Dixie Highway, west of Auburndale, will be closed for three days just south of Evergreen Street, which is located .15 mile north of US Highway 92 (E. Memorial Blvd.).

The county says the temporary closure is required to replace a drainage pipe beneath road, and will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 12.

The Polk County Health Department has been recognized as "ready" if a public-health emergency strikes.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials recently recognized the department, for the second time, for its ability to respond in a crisis.

Lake Wales claims 5A State Championship

Lakeland, FL -- In the 5A State Basketball championship on Saturday, Lake Wales faced off against Terry Parker out of Jacksonville and came up with a huge win.

Lake Wake just stormed out of the gate. The Highlanders would open up the game with a 10-0 run.

Lake Whales made it an 18-point lead in the 1st quarter with a Russell Wilson steal and layup. It was 19-1 with time winding down in the 1st quarter.

Leon Davis Jr.'s next murder trial is delayed

Bartow, Fla. -- Leon Davis Jr., the man convicted of burning two women to death at a Lake Wales insurance office in 2007, will have to wait several months longer before standing trial on another pair of murder charges.

Six days before killing 27-year-old Yvonne Bustamante, and 23-year-old Juanita Luciano, Davis allegedly shot and killed Dashrath Patel and Pravinkumar Patel.

Woman arrested after attack on elderly couple

Winter Haven, FL - Winter Haven Police have made an arrest in the Jan. 3, 2012 attack on an elderly couple during a robbery at their Winter Haven home. The elderly man was bitten on the arm when the attack occurred.

On 2-29-12, Yolanda Rae Gibson was arrested and charged after being positively identified in the attack. (see original story below) Gibson has been charged with Burglary of a Dwelling, Robbery, two counts of Battery on the Elderly and Tampering with a Witness .

She is being held at the Polk County Jail.

Burglar leaves inmate card at scene of crime

Winter Haven, Fla. -- It wasn't too hard for Winter Haven police to figure out who committed a burglary last week.

The suspect left behind his Department of Corrections Inmate Card, police said.

23-year-old Corey Steven Wimberly, of 200 Avenue K, SE, was located by Lake Alfred police, who arrested him Tuesday for Grand Theft Auto, Fleeing to Elude, Burglary and Trespass.

Winter Haven Police added charges of Burglary, Grand Theft, Criminal Mischief and two counts of resisting an officer without violence.
