Driver in deadly DUI crash pleads no contest

Bartow, FL -- The driver in a DUI manslaughter crash that killed an elderly Haines City woman in October 2010 has pled no contest.

Investigators say 40-year-old Audrey Yutzy was driving a Ford Explorer that crossed a double yellow line on Lake Hatchineha Road and struck a Grand Marquis, killing the driver, 84-year-old Margaret Shaughnessy, of Mulberry.

Yutzy was ejected from her SUV and hospitalized in critical condition. Deputies say she has since recovered from her injuries.

Woman breaks into house, bites elderly man

Winter Haven, Florida -- Police are searching for a woman they say broke into an elderly couple's home and bit the man on both arms before fleeing.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on January 3rd, Winter Haven police say the 67 and 68-year-old husband and wife returned home from eating lunch, where they found a woman standing in their bedroom.

The husband chased after the woman while his wife called police. He found her hiding in some bushes near the house, and the two struggled.

Family still waiting for remains of murdered mom and daughter

Winter Haven, Florida - Another Christmas has come and gone for a family that's still desperate to have closure.

Winter Haven police say a college student and her daughter were murdered and buried in an orange grove in Polk County. The remains thought to be 29-year-old Ronkeya Holmes and her 3-year-old daughter, Masarah, were buried in a shallow grave, according to detectives. The remains were found in December of 2010, but the victim's family is still waiting for the remains to be released so the victims can be laid to rest.

Thieves make off with $25,000 in oranges

Winter Haven, FL -- Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Haines City Police Department are asking for the public’s help find the persons responsible for stealing approximately $25,000 in oranges.
 
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at an unknown time, unknown suspects removed the oranges belonging to a trucking company from a trucking lot in Lake Hamilton.

Injured police officer honored as Officer of Year

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - An Auburndale police officer shot several times with an assault rifle while responding to a domestic disturbance call has been named officer of the year.

Stacy Booth was recognized Thursday as the 2011 Small Department Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Polk County Police Chiefs' Association. She was shot in September while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Firefighters battle blaze at Winter Haven auto body shop

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Winter Haven and Polk County firefighters were on the scene of a fire at the Havendale Auto Body Shop on Havendale Blvd. Wednesday.

Polk County Fire Rescue says the fire started in a bathroom and quickly spread throughout the building. The auto body shop has been in existence since 1985.
