Fla. bicyclist struck, killed by tractor-trailer

FROSTPROOF, Florida (AP) - Authorities say a 20-year-old bicyclist has died after he was hit by a tractor-trailer in central Florida.

Polk County Sheriff's officials say the crash happened Monday afternoon in Frostproof. Deputies say Daniel Paul Smith died a short time later at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The Orlando Sentinel reports 29-year-old Levon S. Garcia was traveling south on U.S Highway 27 when he struck Smith, who was on the right shoulder of the road.

Second "Grinch" arrested in "Toys for Tots" investigation

Winter Haven, FL -- Polk County Sheriff's detectives have arrested another woman in connection to the Dec. 17 robbery of a "Toys for Tots' container from a local Hungry Howie's Pizza store.

Detectives charged 27-year-old Amanda Atkins for the theft of the box filled with donated toys. Atkins was already in jail on an unrelated theft charge.

Local bank helps teachers improve financial literacy

Polk County, FL -- Fifth Third Bank announced it will be holding a Teacher Workday to help improve the financial literacy in Polk County for teachers on Jan. 2.

During the workday, executives from Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay) will visit six Polk County schools to discuss financial literacy and provide identity theft protection advice to more than 420 teachers. Other topics that may be discussed include budgeting, saving, credit building and information on the HARP updates.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A Winter Haven man is under arrest after deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office found videos of child porn on his computer.

David Conner, 33, has a lengthy criminal history in Polk County. He has been arrested in the past on charges of armed burglary, armed robbery, armed kidnapping, fraud, forgery, and grand theft.
