Toddler drowns in pool

Winter Haven, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the drowning death of a 2-year-old Winter Haven girl Monday.

According to the sheriff's office, around 11 a.m., the girl was found in the pool at the home on 16th St. NE. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday to determine an exact cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.

Lake Alfred, FL -- Detectives are investigating a robbery at the Dollar General Store on Friday, Dec. 23.

According to the sheriff's office, around 10 p.m., a man armed with a black semi-automatic handgun entered the store, at 725 South Lake Shore Way, pointed it at store employees and demanded money. After the employees filled a bag with money, the man fled the store heading north.

He is described as a black male, 5'7" to 5'9", 175 lbs., wearing blue pants, a camouflage jacket and a T-shirt covering his face.

Winter Haven woman arrested for stealing donated toys

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - Authorities in central Florida say tips from the public led them to a woman who allegedly stole toys from a donation box at a Hungry Howie's pizza shop.

Polk County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer says 27-year-old Amanda Akins was already in jail on an unrelated theft charge. Detectives interviewed her after getting a tip that she may have been the woman in a video from the Polk City restaurant released by the sheriff's office.

Service will resume normal operations on Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Jan. 3.

Bartow, FL -- The Central Florida Development Council’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host six seminars in January to help budding entrepreneurs complete a thorough business plan, start a new business and improve customer service.

Four seminars will be held at the Neil Combee County Administration Building, Room 139 (first floor), 330 West Church Street in Bartow and two seminars will be held at area chambers of commerce.

Steps to Starting a Small Business will be offered 9:30 a.m. – noon on Jan. 4 at the Neil Combee Building.

Gifts among items stolen from home

Frostproof, FL -- Detectives are investigating a 'Grinch' crime that occurred at a Frostproof home Wednesday.

Police say the thieves broke into the home, at 538 Hopson Road, while the resident was away dealing with a death in the family between the hours of noon and 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 21.

The suspects broke in through a window and stole two televisions, jewelry, and all of the presents under the Christmas tree intended for her two children. The presents included baby toys, an iPad, a laptop, and a Nintendo DS.
