Pedestrian killed in traffic accident

Winter Haven, FL -- A 36-year-old Winter Haven woman was killed Friday morning while trying to cross US-17.

According to police, around 6:50 a.m., Shantel Louise Waugh was crossing US-17 near 3rd Avenue when she was hit by car, driven by 24-year-old Joshua Bascomb. After being hit by Bascomb's 3-door Mitsubishi, she was propelled into the middle lane and was run over by a van and a Ford F-150.

Police say the area was dark with no lights and Waugh was not crossing within a crosswalk.

Charges in the investigation are pending. The incident is still under investigation.

Public's help needed in Haines City shooting

Haines City, FL -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies are asking for the public's help with a shooting investigation that occured on Sept. 29 in Haines City.

According to detectives, around 5:10 p.m., a person was shot at the intersection of H.L. Smith and Hatchineha Road. The victim received non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies believe several witnesses saw the incident, and are urging them to come forward.

Polk English teacher named “Beginning Teacher” runner-up

English teacher Karen Murray of Haines City High School has been awarded the state “Beginning Teacher of the Year” Runner-up Award from the Florida Council of Teachers of English (FCTE), the second-highest statewide award in this category.  

Murray was presented the Award at the FCTE’s Annual Meeting in Orlando on Oct. 13, 2011.
