USDA citrus freeze report released today | Environment

Maitland, FL -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with the National Agricultural Statistics Service, released its report today on the effect of sub-freezing temperatures on Florida citrus for the month of December, which was the coldest on record for the state.

Using the Federal-State Inspection Service standards, oranges and grapefruits from Florida citrus-producing regions were cut and scored to check for damage at various depths to record the greatest severity of damage.

For all varieties, the majority of the samples surveyed on Jan. 10-11 fell into the "no damage apparent" category.

The same was done for measuring the distribution and severity of leaf damage to the citrus. For all varieties, the majority of samples checked fell into the "no leaf damage" category.

Samples also showed a decrease in acidity since the last sampling on Jan. 1.
