Pickin' in the Park

Winter Haven, Florida-- On the first Friday of every month, Winter Haven Hospital and the City of Winter Haven host a free community sing-along music event in downtown Central Park.

This coming Friday's (May 4) event takes place from 6:30 - 8 p.m.

The sing-alongs take place on the first Friday of every month from September through May, and they feature local musicians.

Event Highlights Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition winners (winter haven)

Winter Haven, Florida-- Attend the 2012 Central Park Stroll in Winter Haven and see the winning sculptures featured in the 2012 Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition.

The Central Park Stroll takes place from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., May 3, in downtown Winter Haven.

Cast your vote for your favorite sculpture for the People's Choice Award. Other prizes will be awarded in this one-of-a-kind sculpture competition.

There will be hands-on art activities for kids, aand live jazz music for the enjoyment of everyone.

Winter Haven, Florida-- Neil Simon's Rumors is showing at Theatre Winter Haven.

Performances began April 12, but there is still time for any who have yet to see this comedic treat! the last showing is Sunday, April 29. 

Adult tickets cost $20, and student tickets cost $17. 

Shows play Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

A scheduling exception applies on Sunday, April 22, with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, April 28's with the show beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Tampa, Florida-- Calling all Dead Heads! The second annual Grateful Dead Meet Up At the Movies event takes place on Thursday, April 19.

Multiple Tampa Bay movie theaters plan to show a never-before-seen Grateful Dead concert, originally recorded at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in the summer of '89.

PCPS, RSVP, AmeriCorps Reads partner for MLK Day of Service Project

During the week of January 9-13, 2012, Polk County Public Schools, Polk County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Polk County AmeriCorps Reads joined in collaboration for the MLK Day of National Service.  Volunteers, coordinated by Polk County RSVP, read the book “Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Robin Hill School” by Margaret McNamara to Kindergarten students in six Title 1 Elementary Schools in Polk County.

11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest winners announced

Polk County Public Schools and the Community Relations Advisory Council of the Board of County Commissioners announced the winners of the 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the annual MLK Breakfast at the Bartow Civic Center.

This year’s essay contest topic was “What Does the Dream Mean to Me?”  Students wrote about what Dr. King had envisioned or hoped to see and what you can do today to promote or advance his dream.
