Vendors needed for Scales and Tails Pet Festival

Mulberry, FL -- Polk County Parks and Recreation needs vendors for the annual Scales and Tails Pet Festival event on Feb. 11, 2012.

Vendors should sell pet-related products or services including, but not limited to: clothing for animals, pet accessories, grooming, animal adoptions, and services such as dog-walking, pet-sitting or obedience training.  Additional vendors featuring general interest crafts will also be approved on a space-available basis.

Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Sherrie B. Nickell, Ed.D. has announced the Superintendent’s Partnership Awards for 2011. 

The awards were for individuals, businesses, civic, faith-based, non-profit and community organizations that provided assistance to schools and school district departments during the 2010-2011 school year.  The partners honored provided a myriad of goods, services, donations, mentoring, tutoring or other assistance and showed exemplary support for students, faculty and or administration during the past school year.

Mixed job growth in Polk County

Winter Haven, Florida - Mixed job growth in Polk County as the unemployment rate falls in September.

According to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation unemployment was at 12 percent last month, down from 13.1 percent the year before and 12.2 percent in August.

Polk County had 2,100 fewer jobs than it did a year ago, and saw a gain of 1,000 jobs from August. A total of 32,621 people were reported as unemployed here last month.

Police search for Hungry Howie's robber

Winter Haven, FL -- Polk County Sheriff's detectives are seeking information about an attempted business burglary that occurred on Sept. 23.

According to detectives, around 2:52 a.m., the man was seen on video surveillance breaking into the Hungry Howie's located at 3006 Winter Lake Road in Winter Haven and trying to take the cash drawer from the cash register. He then fled the scene.

Winter Haven creates council to help create jobs

Winter Haven, FL -- Winter Haven business leaders and city officials have announced the formation of an Economic Development Council.

Angeleu Economics, economic development consultants, recommended an EDC for the City of Winter Haven to help create jobs, expand the city's tax base, attract new businesses and promote the expansion of existing businesses within the Winter Haven area.

"We've identified target industries best suited for recruitment to and expansion in the Winter Haven area, such as medical services; software and information technology; and logistics and distribution facilities," Ingram Leedy, President/CEO of Elephant Outlook and Chairman of the Transition Team heading up the EDC effort said in a release. "General business and professional services would be on that list, as well as agribusiness. Those are niches we will be directing our development efforts towards."
