Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Transition students located at USF recently volunteered to put together gift bags for homeless Polk County Public Schools graduating seniors.
The gift bags they prepared contained items for daily living including sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, wash cloths, toiletries and personal hygiene items. A roll of quarters for laundry, bus passes and gift cards to local restaurants and grocery stores were also included in the stack of items.
These gift bags will be distributed within the next two weeks to eligible students. According to information provided by the Hearth Project, there are approximately 2,100 homeless students across the district. Of those, 100 seniors are currently homeless.
The Sunshine Committee of the Learning Support Division spearheaded this project in conjunction with the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) and Student Services.
