Polk teacher named AFA’s National Aerospace 'Teacher of the Year'

BARTOW, FL-- Lori Beth Bradner, a science instructor at Valleyview Elementary is the recipient of the Air Force Association’s (AFA) National Teacher of the Year award. AFA’s National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award recognizes teachers who inspire enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among kindergarten through 12th grade students.

She received a $3,000 prize and a plaque for her achievement during an awards ceremony held Saturday, September 15 in Washington, D.C.

3 local teams battle for top title in Sam's Club National BBQ Tour

Bentonville, Ark.--Three local teams have prevailed in local and regional level competitions of the Sam's Club National BBQ Tour, and are now gearing up for the upcoming Championship in Bentonville, Ark. this Saturday, October 13. 

The Swamp Boys, from Winter Haven, Good Buddies BBQ, from Lakeland and Everglades Seasoning BBQ from Sebring will strongly represent the state of Florida as they compete against one another for the top title, and a $500,000 prize purse.

Bartow, FL -- Folks from all over the region are invited to take part in Lakeland Hair Salon's 4th Annual Hair for Hope.

Michael Rose Hair Designs is hosting what they refer to as a truly "hairoic" cut-a-thon to benefit women battling cancer.

Participants have to be ready to part with at least 8 inches of their hair, which will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and used to make wigs that are distributed free through American Cancer Society wig banks nationwide to women undergoing cancer treatment.

All Saints' Academy to donate $1,900 to 'K-9s for Cops'

Winter Haven, FL-- Students at All Saints' Academy will present a donation of over $1,900 to the “K-9s for Cops” charity program tomorrow morning.

Students generated the funds through the school’s “dress out day”- a day which allows students to make a donation to wear regular clothes instead of their school uniforms, which in turn allows for a contribution to a local charity. The students selected the “K-9s for Cops” initiative as part of their regular charity fundraising initiative.

Thanksgiving Food Drive to begin soon

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Board of County Commissioners is gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

The annual drive has donated more than 51 tons of food to families in need over the past 19 years, or at least that is the best estimate provided by this year's food drive coordinator, Mike Bingham of Polk County Social Services.

Food drive collection boxes will be placed in the Social Services department around the end of October, and will remain there until pick up on November 15.

Wing Fling Tour raises money for Humane Society of Polk Co.

Polk County, Florida -- The Wing Fling Tour is back on Sept. 29 with its one-of-a-kind tasting tour charity event benefiting the Humane Society of Polk County.

Participants of the Wing Fling Tour will fly around Polk County in luxury coach buses sampling some of the best chicken wings at nine restaurants around town. One of the stops on the tour this year will include the The Humane Society of Polk County giving people the chance to tour the facility, play games, and sample wings from BubbaChuck's BBQ.

Today, Americans will take time to remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11. On that day in 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four passenger jets with the intention of coordinated strikes on New York City and Washington, D.C.

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks.
