One dead in Winter Haven shooting | Crime
Winter Haven, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies have released updated information regarding the shooting that took place just before 3 p.m. today.
Authorities say they received a call around 2:50 p.m. that someone was shot at #5 Bernie Hill Court in Winter Haven, the home of 69-year-old Kimber Phillips and her husband, 64-year-old Stephen Phillips.
Police confirm that Kimber Phillips' son, Jay Sherrill, 33 of Bartow, was killed in the incident.
Stephen Phillips told officials that he and his step-son, Sherrill, were involved in a verbal argument outside of Phillips' residence. Witnesses confirmed hearing the altercation occur.
Phillips told detectives he feared Sherrill's behavior would escalate to violence, so he went into his home to avoid his step-son. Sherrill, however, forced his way into the residence and threatened to kill Phillips.
Detectives say Phillips told them he armed himself with a shotgun and yelled for Sherrill to leave, but Sherill continued to advance toward Phillips in a threatening manner.
At that time, authorities say, Phillips fired a single shot at Sherill's chest, resulting in his death at the scene.
Through their investigation, detectives have learned of prior altercations between Phillips and his step-son in which Sherrill was the aggressor.
Polk detectives have been investigating since the incident occurred, and anticipate no charges at this point.
The investigation does continue, and an autopsy will be conducted.
