Homeless graduating seniors get help from Polk County Transition students

 

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Transition students located at USF recently volunteered to put together gift bags for homeless Polk County Public Schools graduating seniors.

The gift bags they prepared contained items for daily living including sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, wash cloths, toiletries and personal hygiene items. A roll of quarters for laundry, bus passes and gift cards to local restaurants and grocery stores were also included in the stack of items.

Lakeland, Florida --The Polk Video Awards took place Tuesday, May 1 at Victory Church located at 1401 Griffin Road, Lakeland. 

Attendees viewed student-produced videos that included documentaries, animations, music videos and school news broadcasts.

The elementary awards event began at 5 p.m., and the middle school awards began around 7.

Lakeland, Florida - Lakeland Regional Medical Center is where 19 year old Esteban Zavala is recovering from at least 3 gunshot wounds. His father tells 10 News that Esteban's doctors expect he will make a full recovery from the physical injuries. The emotional pain of seeing his two best friends gunned down on the other hand, Esteban's dad says that is in God's hands.

"They wanted to make something of their lives and used their education to do that," says Estaban Zavala's father, Fernando Zavala.

Polk County, Florida -- Kindergarten Round-Up for Polk County Public Schools began yesterday, April 26 and many schools have designated special days, times or evening hours during Round-Up to enroll kindergarteners. 

Please contact individual schools for their Kindergarten Round-Up schedules. Schools can also tell you about required proof of age, medical and residency documentation needed for enrollment. Students entering kindergarten must be five-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2012.

Lakeland, Florida-- The Polk County chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. presents "Mind, Body, Wealth: Empowerment for the Entire Family" on Friday May 11, and Saturday May 12 and Polk State College. 

The event offers seminars for women, men, and children over the course of the two days.

The Magna Awards recognize districts across the country for outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools.  Polk County Public Schools was honored in the over 20,000 enrollment category.
