World Hepatitis Testing Day this Friday - free testing for 18+

 

 

Bartow - The Polk County Health Department (PCHD) recognizes May as National Hepatitis Awareness Month to spread the word about the global impact of viral hepatitis, and the importance of preventing hepatitis-related liver disease.

In honor of the month, The Polk County Health Department will provide free hepatitis testing and vaccines for adults18 and older on World Hepatitis Testing Day, May 18, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Bartow Immunizations Clinic, 1255 Brice Boulevard, in Bartow.

The Polk County Health Department has been recognized as "ready" if a public-health emergency strikes.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials recently recognized the department, for the second time, for its ability to respond in a crisis.

Lakeland, FL -- On Feb. 10, the Tobacco Free Partnership of Polk County, along with the Polk County Medical Association and Central Florida Area Health Education Center, recognized Cauney Bamberg for her work to help people kick the habit.

As a past Chair and long-time supporter of the Tobacco Free Partnership, Bamberg has played a key role in developing the Partnership over the years.

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Health Department announced the release of the Florida Kindergarten and 7th Grade Immunization Status Report for 2011-12.

Each October, all public and private schools nationwide with a kindergarten and/or 7th grade class are required to submit reports on the immunization status of those students.  The information is then compiled and sent to the Bureau of Immunizations.

Winter Haven, Florida -- The Winter Haven Hospital Foundation Citrus Classic, a community-wide health event, will take place at LEGOLAND Florida on April 14.

This marks the first year for the Citrus Classic's new home at LEGOLAND, which opened in October.  Hundreds of participants are expected to take part in one of two events planned for the Classic: a 5K run and a 3-mile walk.

Bartow, FL -- The Polk County Health Department will be closed from Dec. 23 - 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday.

All centers will reopen on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Health Officials say normal holiday closure would have been Dec. 26 only.

However, they say a directive from Governor Rick Scott issued today extended the holiday time off to include the Friday before Christmas also.

Fifth case of rabies reported in Polk

Fifth case of rabies reported in Polk

Davenport, FL -- On Nov. 22, the residents at 758 Delancey Dr. in Davenport found a bat in their home, according to the sheriff's office.

PCSO Animal Control officers impounded the bat and lab results today confirmed it was positive for rabies.

The five people living in the home have been notified and will seek the appropriate medical treatment.

The Polk County Sheriff's Animal Control Section says this is the fifth positive rabies case this year.
