Polk County health director to take new position

Polk County, FL-- The Florida Department of Health announced that Polk County Health Department (PCHD) Director, Dr. Daniel Haight, accepted the position of Associate Vice President of Community Health at Lakeland Regional Medical Center (LRMC). 

The transition, they say, is expected to occur over the next month, and Dr. Ulyee Choe will serve as Interim PCHD Director, as of November 19.

Bartow, FL--Polk County Fire Rescue members will make breast cancer awareness a local initiative by taking part in the Pink Heals "Cares Enough to Wear Pink Campaign", a campaign embraced by EMS, Fire Rescue and Public Safety organizations nationwide. 

On Oct. 16, 17 and 18, they will hang up their traditional red, white and blue uniforms, and don pink shirts.

3 local teams battle for top title in Sam's Club National BBQ Tour

Bentonville, Ark.--Three local teams have prevailed in local and regional level competitions of the Sam's Club National BBQ Tour, and are now gearing up for the upcoming Championship in Bentonville, Ark. this Saturday, October 13. 

The Swamp Boys, from Winter Haven, Good Buddies BBQ, from Lakeland and Everglades Seasoning BBQ from Sebring will strongly represent the state of Florida as they compete against one another for the top title, and a $500,000 prize purse.

All Saints' Academy to donate $1,900 to 'K-9s for Cops'

Winter Haven, FL-- Students at All Saints' Academy will present a donation of over $1,900 to the “K-9s for Cops” charity program tomorrow morning.

Students generated the funds through the school’s “dress out day”- a day which allows students to make a donation to wear regular clothes instead of their school uniforms, which in turn allows for a contribution to a local charity. The students selected the “K-9s for Cops” initiative as part of their regular charity fundraising initiative.

Household hazardous waste drop off in October

Polk County, FL– Polk County residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic equipment for FREE during a collection event this month.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 13 in the Mill Avenue parking lot, west of the Neil Combee Administration Building (behind Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant).

Thanksgiving Food Drive to begin soon

Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Board of County Commissioners is gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

The annual drive has donated more than 51 tons of food to families in need over the past 19 years, or at least that is the best estimate provided by this year's food drive coordinator, Mike Bingham of Polk County Social Services.

Food drive collection boxes will be placed in the Social Services department around the end of October, and will remain there until pick up on November 15.
