Eight-week lane closure on Old Highway 37

Polk County, Florida-- According to a recent release from the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, residents should prepare for an eight-week lane closure on Old Highway 37.

While the county works to replace a water main, residents will have to avoid the mile stretch between Ewell Road and Shepard Road .

The closure begins at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 16 and should should be completed by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15.

'Rowdy' Gaines Olympic Pool closed for repairs

Winter Haven, FL -- The 'Rowdy' Gaines Olympic Pool, at the Chain O'Lakes Complex, is getting a facelift!

The popular pool, used for lifeguard training, scuba diving training, a practice spot for the Winter Haven Stingrays Swim Team, and recreational swimmers, is going to be closed for two weeks beginning today, Jan. 11 while the pool liner is replaced.

The $76,875 project will be done by Aquatic Renovations Systems, Inc.

The Winter Haven Stingrays competitive swim team will practice in Lakeland until the work is done.

Busy library closing for maintenance

Winter Haven, Florida -- The Winter Haven Public Library will close for two days in December for building maintenance.

On Dec. 9 & 10, the library will be closed. Some of the projects slated to be accomplished during the 2-day closure include carpet and tile cleaning and pressure washing of the roof.

The Winter Haven Library had more than 750,000 visitors last year.

The Library will re-open Dec. 12 for regular business hours.

Firefighter and EMS memorial going up at Hero's Park

Bartow, FL -- A new memorial dedicated to Polk County’s fallen firefighters and EMS workers is being unveiled in Hero’s Park on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.

The memorial is designed with three intersecting pieces constructed of deep-hued red and black granite with firefighter and EMS insignias engraved at the top. Between the two main pivotal pieces is a smaller pedestal which holds a bell to ring in memory of those who gave all in service to the Polk County community.

The memorial was designed and sponsored by the Polk County Professional Firefighters Local 3531, Inc., Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, and Century Granite of Elberton, Georgia.

Winter Haven, FL -- The Winter Haven Public Library holds its Enrichment Series movie on the first Thursday of the month.

This month's movie is The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei and Ryan Philippe.

The movie depicts Mick Haller as a slick, charismatic Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car. Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime. What initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money payoff swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.

Treasure hunt fun comes to Circle B Bar Reserve

Bartow, FL -- Ranger Rick’s Geocache Trail at Circle B Bar Reserve now offers Polk County families a free, high-tech, wildlife theme adventure featuring Ranger Rick and his pals from the award-winning children’s magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

It combines GPS-enabled technology with a real-life outdoor treasure hunt designed for families, especially those with kids ages 6 to 14.

“The Polk County Environmental Lands Program is happy we can provide this unique outdoor adventure to families in our community,” Tabitha Biehl-Gabbard, stewardship coordinator for the Environmental Lands Program said in a release. “Our Ranger Rick’s Trail not only makes treasure hunting fun and exciting by incorporating technology that kids love, but connects families to nature along the way.”
