Superintendent’s Lunch and Learn with seniors

High school seniors from seven Polk County high schools participated in the Superintendent’s Lunch and Learn event last week at the Bartow Public Library. 

The students met with Polk County Public Schools (PCPS) Superintendent Sherrie B. Nickell, Ed. D. and Associate Superintendent of Learning David Lewis to discuss their educational experiences while enrolled in PCPS.  The seniors offered their insight, advice, input and suggestions to the officials during the discussions.

This event was coordinated by the Community Relations Department.

Ninth Grade Students and Parents take note. A new state-mandated high school graduation requirement, including an Algebra I “End of Course” (EOC) examination, is coming to a high school near you in Polk County Public Schools (PCPS) for the 2011-12 school year.

“Fill-a-Bag” to benefit Polk’s Hearth Project for homeless students

Polk County, FL -- Polk County Public School’s (PCPS)  Hearth Project kicks off its “Fill-A-Bag” campaign to benefit Polk County public school students who have been identified as homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless.

The Hearth Project, under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, provides Polk County homeless students with educational stability and assistance.

Roosevelt Academy class named finalist in State Green School Awards

Lake Wales, FL -- The Horticultural Science Class at Roosevelt Academy in Lake Wales has been named one of three Class Finalists in the 2011 Florida Green School Awards Program.  There were 103 applications in the contest, with 16 finalists being selected in one of four categories.  Roosevelt Academy was the only public school from Polk County to be named as a finalist.

Bartow, FL -- The Polk County School Board will meet in a special meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in the School Board Auditorium at the district administrative office, 1915 South Floral Ave., Bartow, FL, 33830. 

The purpose of the meeting is reorganization of the school board and to conduct school board business.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m.

November 28 Special Budget Workshop

The Polk County School Board will conduct a Special Budget Workshop on Monday, Nov. 28 at Winter Haven High School, Media Center Small Conference Room, 600 6th Street SE, Winter Haven. The work session will begin at 9 a.m.

The purpose is to hear a presentation by Dr. Jim Hamilton to the School Board on how the state’s education budget is constructed, how school districts receive and manage funding, and what the outlook is so far in terms of the state education budget.
