3 Polk students win state writing awards

Lakeland, FL -- Three Polk County students are winners of statewide awards in the annual Florida Council of Teachers of English (FCTE) Writing Competition.

It is significant that three students from Polk School District have won at the statewide level.

Hannah Elrod, an 8th grade student at Lake Gibson Middle School in Lakeland, won her award for a piece titled "Lessons from the Past." Her teacher is Donna Shattuck of Lakeland Senior High School.

Camille Rousseliere, a 9th grade student from International Baccalaureate/Bartow High School in Bartow, won her award for a critical response titled, "The Effect of Setting in Wuthering Heights". Her teacher is Ola Harb of IB World School and Summerlin Academy at Bartow High School.

Polk County, FL -- The 10th annual Shining Star winners for the Polk County School District were announced on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The Shining Star program began as a project to promote collaboration among the technology leaders in Polk County Schools.  It has since developed into a vehicle for recognizing the successful application of technologies within school programs, as well as encouraging the adaptation of new ideas which will enhance learning for the next generation.

The 2011 Shining Star winners are:

Gold:  Bartow Sr. High, Kathleen Elementary, Lakeland Highlands Middle, Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, Lincoln Avenue Academy, R. Bruce Wagner Elementary, Sleepy Hill Elementary, and Spessard L. Holland Elementary.

Crossing guard post eliminated

Winter Haven, FL -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office announced that the school crossing guard at Boys Club Road and Havendale Boulevard will be eliminated starting Friday, Sept. 30.

According to a release, the crossing isn't being consistently used by elementary students walking to Garner Elementary, resulting in its elimination.

Deputies patrol school zones daily and want to remind motorists that caution is critical and fines are doubled in the designated zones.

Thirteen Polk public school students were named 2012 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists in an announcement by the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC).

The 13 srudents are among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Polk Co. teens to help boost reading proficiency of youngsters

Polk County, FL -- High schools in Polk County are preparing to open new volunteer mentor programs which inspire students to become better readers and outstanding youth role models. 

The recruitment of teen mentors for three new Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors programs at Bartow International Baccalaureate, Ridge Community, Winter Haven High School coincides with International Literacy Day – an annual Sept. 8 observance to focus attention on the importance of literacy.   

Approximately 50 local students will join thousands of others across Florida who will be trained to mentor 2nd and 3rd graders whose reading levels are, on average, six to nine months behind their peers.

Winter Haven, Florida - Winter Haven Hospital is leasing space at its Gil Jones Center on Lake Alfred Road for the New Beginnings High School.

The charter school classes opened this week.  New Beginnings High School is the state's first non-profit community school directed at helping students who haven't had success at traditional high schools.

New Beginnings is a charter school approved by the Polk County School Board.  It has six classrooms, administrative space and support facilities.

Polk County, FL -- Sheriff Grady Judd wants to remind Polk County residents to be on the look-out for children everywhere as they head back to school on Aug. 22.

The amount of vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic on our roadways will dramatically increase during early morning and after-school hours.  

Approximately 48 percent of the schools’ student population are walk, ride a bike or are transported to school in a car. 

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office provides school crossing guards at 165 designated school crossing locations throughout Polk County to ensure the safe escort of its elementary students.  These dedicated members arrive for work twice a day, often in inclement weather, and are extensively trained in accordance with recognized national standards (Ramon Turnquest Act).
