Polk County, Florida-- New state-mandated high school graduation guidelines now require students who are taking Algebra I or Algebra I Honors to successfully pass the Algebra I End-of-Course (EOC) exam to receive a standard high school diploma.

Bartow, FL -- Gause Academy students recently participated in a crash course in building and repairing computers.  Students and staff from Polk State College (PSC) Collegiate High, and students from Traviss Career Center, visited Gause Academy to guide sixth, seventh and eighth grade students through a Computer Exploration Lab.

According to Gause Academy instructor Angela Price, the exercise involved both academic and business/computer classes.

'Pet Connection' interactive webcast series debuts with holiday show

Polk County, FL -- Polk’s Government Television (PGTV), in partnership with Orchid Springs Animal Hospital, announces the debut of a new interactive webcast series especially for animal lovers.  “Pet Connection with Dr. Mitsie Vargas” kicks off with a holiday theme on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 7-8 p.m.

Unlike with a television show, internet viewers determine the content of the program, with each webcast having a specific theme or topic.

Traffic app helps holiday shoppers

Before you head out to the mall this year for Christmas shopping keep in mind that you can take a look at what traffic looks like before you get on the highway.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has an app for that.

The Florida 511 app now features traffic camera views that show crashes, congestion and other incidents on all of Florida's interstates and roll roads. The app uses the iPhone's GPS tracking to provide you with traffic information within miles of your location.

Three Polk County agri teachers honored by Polk Farm Bureau

Three agriculture teachers from Polk County School District have been recognized for outstanding achievements by the Polk County Farm Bureau (PCFB) at the organization’s annual meeting last month in Bartow.

Kathleen High School teachers Keitha Hall and Kyle Carlton were recognized as the PCFB “Agriculture Program of the Year” for 2011.  Founded in 1937, the program currently consists of 300 students and offers courses in forestry, horticulture, animal science, aquaculture, agriculture mechanics, and agriculture communications. 

Carlton graduated from the University of South Florida and has been an agriculture teacher at Kathleen since 2000.  Hall graduated from the University of Florida and has been an agriculture teacher for twelve years.
